One of the most fun and satisfying projects I’ve ever worked on was Carolyn Murphy’s amazing house in Los Angeles, which Vogue shot for its March issue.
Carolyn and I have worked together on a few places over the years, but this latest venture was a total blast. With her great respect and fondness for unique vintage pieces, we were able to include an amazing collection of furniture and textiles that enhanced the already perfectly appointed Provencal architectural details.

In addition to their fantastic inventory of early American furniture and accessories, they have the most incredible collection of cushions in gorgeous stripes and plaids, not to mention amazing one of a kind pieces made from serapes (a personal favorite – for a house in Santa Fe – one day!), Navajo weavings and rag rugs.
above: photo by grey crawford for vogue.Art Studio (above): The art studio used to be a garage filled to the rafters with boxes of Christmas decorations, miscellaneous furniture from days gone by and rabbit food.
We cleared it out and left the walls and floors as they were. We moved in layered, striped kilims; a vintage print from Big Daddy’s; tattered linen arm chairs; a hammered metal table from Hollywood at Home; a crafted twig stand from Nickey Kehoe; palm tree from Inner Gardens; vintage easels and sculpture stands from galerie half, and a massive work table (c. 1910) from an artist’s atelier in Paris.
I tossed in pillows made of antique Turkish towel remnants to add a touch of delicacy to the room. Pat McGann has the most comprehensive array of exotic textile-based pillows in LA – there are so many treasures here! Every visit is a treat!!!
We left Carolyn’s beaten up hat and bridles just where they were.
above: photos by grey crawford for vogue.Living Room (above): The goal of the project was to create a pretty space, but not make anything too precious or “done.”
I adore the simplicity of the combination of this chair from Lucca, pillow from Lee Stanton, and industrial floor lamp. The bookcases are dressed with a touch of natural elements – an antique leather box, a handful porcupine quills (from eBay!) in a vintage silver Indian drinking glass, and some loose antlers.
Thanks to the unparalleled floral designer Louesa Roebuck (whom I serendipitously met at a Remodelista party hosted by Big Daddy’s), there is a bit of pleasing tension between the industrial, sculptural lamp and the lacy palm spray in the watery blue glass vase.
above: photos by grey crawford for vogue.Kitchen (above): In the kitchen, and laundry room beyond, blue and white stripes abound! It’s all about the materials here – the former owners of the house installed the stone sinks, as well as the reclaimed terracotta floors, so we just added to Carolyn’s already lovely group of vintage oil paintings, and tossed in some rustic pottery, along with a sturdy and cheerful laundry basket from Mecox Gardens, and a kilim runner from J. Iloulian.
above: photos by grey crawford for vogue.Bathroom (above): A bathroom with a vined terrace – what could be more perfect?! The corner chair is from Rosemarie McCaffrey Antiques and the two rocking chairs on the balcony are from Groundwork at ABC.
Also, just look at the GIGANTIC, magical spray of pink and cream wild roses that florist Louesa found…unreal!
above: photos by grey crawford for vogue. The best part? The charming menagerie of three chickens, a rabbit, a cat and a dog, all coexisting peacefully in her backyard in heart of the city!

PS. Love your Blog!
Hi Tania -
Thanks for getting in touch! The house you see in Vogue is a new one for Carolyn that’s never been photographed. Hopefully, we’ll be able to reveal more shots soon. It’s a magical place.
Best,
Schuyler
I found this blog through Anna Spiros Absolutely Beautiful Things blog in Australia. I love the photograph of Carolyn in the back yard. Do you think she might tell us where she got that fabulous dress?
Hi Karen –
Carolyn’s dress is by Rodarte (spring collection), and it was even more beautiful in person!!!
Thanks for writing,
Schuyler
I have just found your blog via Style Court. It is fascinating to see those ‘tagged’ images, a nice way to reveal the ‘provenance’ of the various objects.
When I recently gave a lecture on chinoiserie I showed an image borrowed from Style Court of the Fromental wallpaper against the brown walls in the Santa Monica House you did (http://bit.ly/cqh4jw), as a great example of present-day chinoiserie decoration. I think it is exciting how that room is very ‘now’ but is also part of the long tradition of chinoiserie.
Dear Emile -
What an honor to have been included in one of your lectures!!! Fromental makes the most lovely papers, and I love their modern use of color.
Thank you so much for your kind words, and I look forward to your blog – it’s incredibly informative!
Best,
Schuyler

We ALMOST bought this house. So much charm, but the home we were selling, fell out of escrow, so we had to let it go. You’ve done a amazing job with it. Found you on “A Bloomsbury Life”. And Rosemarie McCaffrey, is a friend, and a place I’ve shopped for years. Going to check out East meets West, sounds great. Congratulations, you did a beautiful job.
Glad no one ruined it.

My brother recommended I might like this website. He was totally right. This post truly made my day. Thanks!
Wow. This home is dreamy. I was flipping through back issues of Vogue the other night when I came across this feature. The orange trees, the striped hamper, the rustic, natural feel of the interior, the light, it’s just too much. Can you please tell me what part of LA this is?
I don’t commonly comment but I gotta admit thankyou for the post on this amazing one : D.
Remarkable work once again. Thanks a million!
